Jane: Innovative Foldable Phone Packaging Inspired by Ancient Chinese Books

A Unique Blend of Tradition and Technology

Jane is a foldable phone packaging design that draws inspiration from the structure of ancient Chinese books, specifically bamboo and wooden slips. With the rising popularity of foldable electronic products, Jane combines traditional culture with advanced technology to create a unique and immersive design experience.

What sets Jane apart is its fusion of ancient Chinese fonts and traditional book forms with the latest technology products. The packaging is made entirely of special paper with wood and fabric textures, eliminating the need for plastic materials and promoting environmental protection. The user manual, which is detachable, can be rolled up and wrapped around the surface of the box using magnets. This not only enhances the packaging's functionality but also adds a sense of ceremony.

When interacting with Jane, users can easily detach the user manual, which features a wood texture, from the packaging. Opening the box reveals the carefully arranged layers that hold the foldable phone and its accompanying items.

The design project for Jane began in July 2019 in China and was completed in December 2019. Throughout the process, the design team, led by Xia Peng, worked closely with design engineer Wu Weifeng and design coordinator Hu Zhangxian.

The development of Jane presented several challenges. One of the main considerations was the trend towards deplasticization in packaging design. Using paper as a moving part required special paper with the necessary strength and flatness to ensure the solidity and functionality of the design.

Jane, created by RRD Lab 2064, has been recognized for its innovation and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2020. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, technical skill, and resourcefulness, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
